Overlap

What Is overlap?

Overlap is a critical parameter in ring debarkers and plays a significant role in their overall effectiveness. It refers specifically to the percentage of the tool tip that makes a second pass over the circumference of a log that has already been debarked. The overlap ensures thorough removal of bark and improves the quality of the debarking process.

Too Little Overlap

If you do not have enough overlap, bark will remain on the log in a spiral formation. We refer to this issue as “candy cane stripes” or “barber pole.” This problem can also occur if the ring debarker has a broken arm, a missing tip, or if you are feeding the logs too quickly overall, compromising the quality of the bark removal process.

Too Much Overlap

If you have too much overlap, you are not running your equipment efficiently, and this can also potentially damage the wood fiber by creating tear outs in the log. This not only reduces the quality of the lumber but can also lead to unnecessary waste and increased production costs.

Correct Overlap

Maintaining the correct overlap is essential for achieving optimal performance, enhancing overall efficiency, and maximizing the yield from each log without causing damage. The percentage for the overlap can be accurately determined by completing the equation provided below.

As we all know, things are never as straightforward as a simple calculation might suggest. Factors such as wood species, temperature variations, moisture content, and changing seasons all play a significant role in the debarking process. After extensive research and much hard work, we have come up with the following “Seasonal Overlap Recommendations” to help optimize your debarking performance.

Fresh Logs = 5-8% Overlap Dry Logs = 10-16% Overlap Frozen Logs = 32-40% Overlap
